Motorhoming in Isère

Situated in the middle of the Rhône Alpes, Isère is a mountainous region which suffers harsh winters and bathes in a provincial sunshine in the summer.  The capital of the department is Grenoble, a modern city with plenty of history dating back through its various periods of development.  Born from a Roman village established on the banks of the river Isère, Grenoble became French in 1349.  The resistance of Grenoble played an important factor in the liberation and the town has continued its development by way of its glove making, textile and metal industries.  You can have a coffee in the square, Place de Grenette, site of the local public executions in years gone by or visit the Italian quarter.  If you’re hiring a motorhome in England or hiring a motorhome in France you can drive up to the fort of the Bastille, or if you fancy you can go up in the cable car which dates from 1934 and is the oldest in Europe.  From this high point you will have an exceptional panorama of Grenoble and the surrounding area and you can also have a stroll along one of the many footpaths which will lead to you discover the fortifications.

Vienne in the north west of the department has a wonderful temple, right in the town centre, which was constructed in the 1st or 2nd century BC.  The Temple of August and Livie, the emperor and his wife, later became a Christian church and was disfigured in the process, before being lovingly restored and becoming the museum that it is today.  In a completely different style is the Cathedral of Saint Maurice combining Roman and Gallic influences.  All of these different styles mix well with the modern Vienne with its art galleries, theatres and good restaurants.  The Saturday morning market which covers 3kms of the town’s streets is not to be missed and is a real treat for the eyes and the taste buds.

If, for you, motorhome travel in France is more about nature, there are three national parks in Isère.  If you’re going motorhoming in the Drôme you can pass through the regional national park of Vercors.  If you’re going motorhoming in the Hautes-Alpes, you can visit the national park of Ecrins.  If you’re staying in Isère around Grenoble you might like to wander through the national regional park of the Chartreuse.  Wherever you find yourself, make the most of the free Aires de Service in the Drôme, the Aires de Service in Isère and the Aires de Service in the Hautes-Alpes.
