Culture, history, heritage and nature are all claimed to be attributes of the department of Oise in the region of Picardie.  Motorhome travel in France is an ideal means to be able to make the most of this department and it is possible to stay in the Aires de service in Oise which are generally free of charge or cost a small amount.  Oise offers its visitors the choice of picturesque villages, splendid châteaux, beautiful countryside and ancient and modern history.

From a distance the Château of Pierrefonds perched high up amongst the trees has a fairytale air about it.  Vestige from the middle ages, the ruined château was bought by Napolean l in 1813 but waited 35 years before restoration work began.  The Château of Ermenonville was also built on the site of a ruined fort in the 18th century.  Cradled in the curve at the end of a lake, the medieval towers of the fort were conserved when this château, modern and innovative at the time, was built.  Its crowning glory is the gardens which became known as ‘the most beautiful gardens in the world’ created by Jean-Jacques Rousseau who was later buried in the garden.  Little hamlets and villages developed around the Château of Chantilly from the middle ages.  This Renaissance palace attracted the kings of France, huntsmen, who came for the sport in the immense forest that surrounded it.  It’s beautiful French gardens were designed by André Le Nôtre who designed the gardens of Versailles.  It is also where the French favourite ‘Chantilly cream’ was invented.  This local speciality consists of whipped cream with a little sugar and vanilla added to appeal to the famous French sweet tooth.

If you’re hiring a motorhome in France it’s an easy way of taking in as many sights as possible and while you’re motorhoming in Picardie and Oise add towns such as Beauvais, 17th century manufacturing town of royal tapestries and Senlis, with a rich history stretching back to Roman times, easily admired when strolling through its ancient streets.  A real jewel and one of Frances most beautiful villages is Gerberoy, a fortified town which was sacked and rebuilt numerous times between the 11th and 15th century.  The painter Henri Le Sidaner fell under the charm of the village where he bought and restored a house and designed his garden, one of his main sources of inspiration.  He also convinced the locals to invest in the life of the village by planting flowers and valorizing their properties.  The result is an evidence and very pleasing to the eye.

Oise was the site of great battles in both the war of 1914-1918 and the Second World War of 1939-1945.  There are numerous sites dedicated to the memory of these wars and the soldiers who lost their lives in Oise.  A wagon turned into an office near to the station of Rethondes witnessed the signature which put an end to the First World War on the 11th November 1918, one of the memories evoked by the museums, monuments, memorials and cemeteries of the department.
