Motorhoming in Ardennes

Ardennes is the northern most of the four departments which make up Champagne Ardennes.  The region is one of the least populated in France and Ardennes hides well its attributes in this department which is not known as a big tourist destination but offers its wide open space, rolling green countryside and historical treasures to anyone who wishes to make their motorhome travel in France a memorable journey.

Situated on the banks of the River Meuse, Sedan is classed as a town of history and art and is home to the largest fortified château in Europe.  Well known 17th century architects constructed magnificent, classic public buildings such as the Hotel de Ville and Sedan was a resolutely modern town for the period.  The wealth of the town grew due to the textile trade which developed around the river and visitors are invited to discover the history of the town more intimately on a guided tour.

The town of Charleville-Mézières was created by the joining of these two towns in 1966 to create the capital of Ardennes.  One town to each side of the River Meuse, each possesses it own history and style.  Of particular interest is the jewel at the heart of Charleville, the ideal in the eyes of the Renaissance, the square ‘Place Ducale’.  An enormous square surrounded by beautiful buildings, all with archways which line the arcade that goes around the square.  The rest of the town was constructed around the geometry of this enormous square.

Ardennes has its own local specialities such as the Rocroi, a strong flavoured cheese in production since the 18th century.  The Tantimolle is a thick crêpe which can be eaten accompanied by savoury or sweet fillings, as a starter or a desert when it is particularly appreciated with a glass of Champagne.

If all that tasting makes you feel like a nap, you can take a rest in one of the Aires de Service in Ardennes or even stay overnight, often for free.  You can carry on the tasting experience in other departments.  Go motorhoming in Marne, motorhoming in Meuse or motorhoming in Aisne.
