Motorhoming in Aube
Motorhoming in Champagne Ardenne is the opportunity to visit things that we have already heard about, notably the industry surrounding Champagne and to discover other things that are unknown to us. Aube is one of the four departments of Champagne Ardenne and is an inviting cocktail of culture and nature.
To make your motorhome travel in France a relaxing experience, head for the National Regional Park of the Forest and Lakes of Orient. This preserved environment invites you to discover the history of the forest which belonged in the past to the Knights of the Orient. Occupied by huge oaks and sprinkled with lakes, this legendary territory which covers 70,000 hectares is criss-crossed by paths for walkers or cyclists, full of flora and fauna and charming villages all living in perfect harmony and offering a real chance to relax and make the most of your surroundings.
The Lake of Orient where you can observe many species of migratory birds is close to the city of Troyes, the capital of Aube. This captivating town is full of treasures and just wandering through its streets is a colourful feast for the eyes with its painted timbered houses dating from the 18th century, not to mention the spectacular stained glass windows housed in its ‘cathedral of light’, the Cathedral Saint Pierre et Saint Paul. When you look at a plan of the town you will see that it is in the form, deliberately or not, of a Champagne cork. Search out the Ruelle aux Chats, the Cour du Mortier d’Or or the Rue Champeaux to discover the heart of this medieval capital.
One of the architectural particularities of the department of Aube is its churches which are built, in what we would consider to be, the style of the Tudors. This remarkable religious architecture is due to the lack of stone in Aube. The churches were quite simply built in the same manner as the houses. This heritage is unique to France and these churches posses a luminosity, with their white painted interior walls, and a warmth, due to their wooden ceilings, which is unknown in stone churches. The church in the village of Bailly-le-Franc is a particularly good example.
If you are on the Champagne trail you will inevitably find yourself in the ‘Riceys’, three little villages under the same name. Ricey-Haut, Ricey-Bas and Ricey-Haute-Rive are surrounded by wooded hillsides and acres of vineyards. The River Laignes flows through the valley and contributes to the elements that make these steep, sunshine filled vineyards the area which produces the rare and unique taste of one of France’s best Rosés. Walkers can use the footpaths in the area to discover the vineyards. If you need a place to take a rest after all of that you can use the Aires de Service in Aube which are often free.
Continue the adventure and go motorhoming in Haute Marne, motorhoming in Marne, motorhoming in Bourgogne or motorhoming in Ile de France.
