Motorhoming In Ille Et Vilaine

MOTORHOMING IN ILLE ET VILAINE

Ille et Vilaine is one of the four departments in Brittany and despite the fact that it possesses the smallest amount of coastline it is not for that that you can permit yourself to miss out on it.  On the contrary, motorhoming in Brittany is not complete without exploring this department full of coastal and inland treasures.

The obvious starting point, if you are crossing the channel by ferry in your motorhome is the port of Saint Malo.  An ideal way to make the most of this wonderful walled town is to walk around its ramparts.  From there you’ll be able to look out to sea, discover the golden sandy beaches and look across the bay towards Dinard.  Looking in, you’ll discover ‘intra muros’ – within the walls, with its narrow streets surrounded by imposing high stone buildings.  It’s a nice town to stroll around, plenty of restaurants and boutiques where you can buy one or two souvenirs.

Crossing the barrage with its electricity generating turbines brings you to the seaside town of Dinard.  Created by an English gentleman in 1852, it was the place to go for the rich French bourgeois and profits today from the vestiges of this golden era.  There are two beautiful sandy beaches linked by a coastal path, best appreciated on a sunny morning when you can relax on one of the benches and take in the sun across the bay.

Heading east along the Emerald Coast, stop off at Cancale to sample some of the best oysters found in France before going to the historical Mont Saint Michel, the most visited site in France.

Imagine a rock, 80 meters high, completely cut off by the sea at high tide.  Then build at its highest point an abbey, now thirteen centuries old, a mix of Roman and Gothic styles.  Surround it by a medieval village protected by ramparts.  This is Mont Saint Michel.  Park up and make the most of its tiny streets, visit the Abbey and the numerous shops.  For nature lovers you can also visit the bay with its varied flora and fauna but watch out for high tide!!

Inland, heading south, visit the towns of Vitré with its 11th century fortress and Fougeres with its thirteen ancient towers.  On a different note the legendary forest of Brocéliande or the Bourbansais Zoo and Château make very pleasant outings.  There are lots to see and do for the children at the Bourbansais.

Don’t miss Rennes, the capital of Brittany. With its cobbled streets, beautiful architecture and trendy boutiques, it’s perfect to stop off and take a coffee on one of the café terraces.

All in all, some superb coastline and beautiful, interesting towns.  To find out where to stay, click on to Aires de Service in Ille et Vilaine
