Motorhoming In Morbihan

MOTORHOMING IN MORBIHAN

What to do first in Morbihan?!  This southern most department of Bretagne is a land of contrasts.  If motorhome travel in France is on your agenda and you’d like to spend some time seeing the sights but also take the time to make the most of the coast, Morbihan has everything you’re looking for.  If you’ve been motorhoming in Finistère, you can carry on south along the coast into Morbihan.

The two principal towns are Lorient and Vannes, both located on the Atlantic coast.  To the north, Lorient owes its origins to the port created in 1664 opening up trade with the Orient.  Every year it hosts the Inter-Celtic festival frequented by thousands of artists, dancers, singers and musicians and welcomes up to 300,000 visitors.  Vannes, an important economic centre of the region has turned towards tourism to ensure its survival, not surprisingly, view its wealth of cultural heritage and local history.  Miraculously spared the ravages of the 2nd World War, take the time to visit its old quarter and cathedral.  You will also find a fine arts museum, an archaeological museum and several interesting footpaths which will take you through Vannes’s gardens.  Visit the Aquarium with it 50 pools containing fish from all around the world, bred on site and its astonishing coral reef built in a pool containing 35 liters of seawater and underwater flora and fauna.  There’s also the Butterfly Garden, tropical greenhouses containing exotic plants, flowers and trees not to mention the hundreds of butterflies flying at liberty amongst them.

Inland to the north of Vannes, visit Malestroit with its superb and well conserved medieval centre.  Admire at the same time the stone houses built during the French Renaissance.  Rochefort en Terre is one of the smallest villages in France, but amongst its most visited.  This charming little place is home to many craftsmen and artists and is a superb place to go just to do some window shopping and to stroll down its little streets full of beautiful flowers.

Heading for the coast, stop off to see the megalithic stones at Carnac before going into the seaside town.  With its beaches of fine golden sand, Carnac has plenty of tourist activities to offer.  Move on to Quiberon, a paradise for lovers of sea and water sports.  Nature has blessed it with a beach no less than 15kms long, a ‘finger’ of land pointing out to sea.  The eastern side is sheltered, with sandy beaches, but the western side displays the ravages of nature, with its grottos and caverns carved in the rocks by the sea, visible at low tide.
