Motorhoming in Moselle

Moselle is the eastern most department of the four departments of Lorraine in the north east of France.  It borders on Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany and is much influenced by its German neighbour, having seen many changes in the frontier up until 1815.  As a place to visit while you motorhome travel in France, you will find a particular mix of culture and a rich history.  A heritage as rich and generous as the welcome you will receive from the inhabitants and lots of interesting things to see and do of an excellent quality.

Hiring a motorhome in France is a hassle free way to sample the delights of Moselle and you can use the Aires de Service in Moselle which are often free for your overnight stays.  Metz is the capital of Lorraine.  This charming city, with its green spaces created around the two rivers which cross the town, its important historical heritage and unique culture, is witness to a rich past.  Particularly pretty at night when all of its principal historical monuments are illuminated, Metz has many sites of interest and places to visit which reflect its prestigious past.  Visit the Gothic cathedral of Saint Etienne and the Ville Nouvelle, the ‘New Town’ which houses some imposing German architecture.

Moselle has many lakes and canals and at Saint Louis Arzviller you can see a sight unique in France.  The Plan Incliné of Saint Louis Arzviller is the most visited sight in the region of Lorraine.  It is a boat lift which takes you up a steep slope of nearly 45m in four minutes – in a boat.  Before its construction, it took a day’s navigating to get through the 17 locks which linked the Marne to the Rhine.  You can take a spectacular boat trip in this ‘lift’ which guides silently along its way.

While motorhoming in Lorraine, take the time to visit the Château de Malbrouck at Manderen.  This imposing four towered château offers an excellent visit tracing five centuries of its history which is brought to life by way of medieval banquets and entertainment.  You can visit the little town of Rodemack which is classed as one of Frances most beautiful villages.  This charming medieval town, surrounded in part by its ancient ramparts is a lovely place to wander and take a step back in time.  Various vestiges such as the château and the half moon shaped prison tower lead you on a discovery trip through the old town and you can go a little further on one of the various footpaths which emanate from the village.

Moselle is home to some very good wine.  Despite the downturn of the regions winemaking after the 1918 Armistice and its vineyards which are not very extensive in comparison to others, the wines of Moselle are of a superior quality and are now seeing a revival.  The ‘Macarons of Boulay’ are still being manufactured today as they were in 1854.   The same recipe which has made these little almond flavoured cakes with a moist interior a real local favourite sees them today exported all around the world.
More to taste if you go motorhoming in Meurthe et Moselle, motorhoming in Vosges or motorhoming in Alsace.
