Motorhoming in the Drôme

Motorhoming in the Drôme

The Drôme is the southern most department of the region of Rhône Alpes.  The department stretches from the fertile valley of the river Rhône in the west to the edge of the Alpes du Dauphiné in the east.  It benefits from a Mediterranean climate without being coastal and is where we find the beautiful lavender fields of Provence.

Valence is the capital of the Rhône Alpes and the area is often described as the gateway to the Mediterranean.  It is a touristic centre, a town full of heritage, culture and history.  The town boasts a rich commercial centre with large boulevards and open green spaces.

To the east of Valence is the hamlet of Archiane, the gateway to Europe’s biggest nature reserve, the Hauts-Plateaux du Vercors.  This mountainous region is actively preserved in its raw state, nature at its wildest.  If you’re hiring a motorhome in France or hiring a motorhome in England, complete the triangle by heading south west to the town of Montélimar.  Apart from visiting the ancient centre of the town you’ll be able to taste local wines and sample the local speciality, nougat.  Motorhome travel in France would not be complete without seeing the famous lavender fields of Provence.  Montélimar is the departure point for circuits which take in the fields.  Why not take your time and make the most of all the sites by using the Aires de Service in the Drôme for your overnight stops.

Heading south from Valence, visit the villages of Mirmande, Le Poët Laval and Montbrun-les-Bains.  Mirmande is listed amongst the most beautiful villages of France and is a real jewel.  Dominated by its church on top of the hill, with its 5th century ramparts, wander through its cobbled streets and breathe in the scent from the gardens filled with Iris and aromatic plants. There are so many beautiful little villages along the route when you’re motorhoming in the Rhône Alpes!

From the Drôme, motorhoming in the Vaucluse or motorhoming in Digne-les-Bains is just one stop away.
