Motorhoming in the Hérault

Motorhoming in the Hérault

With its rich heritage and long stretch of Mediterranean coastline the department of Hérault finds itself in the middle of the region of Languedoc Roussillon.  If you’re hiring a motorhome in France hiring a motorhome in England, touring is at its best when benefiting from the gentle and sunny climate of the Mediterranean which sets the pace of life in the Hérault.

Montpellier is the regional capital of Languedoc Roussillon and along with its wonderful climate it seduces us with the charms of its architecture and diverse culture.  Home to 60,000 students, Montpellier is a wonderful mix of youth, history and the perfumed air which is carried on the breeze from the beautiful town gardens.  Whether you are interested in visiting the historical sights of the town or just relaxing with a coffee or a glass of wine on the terrace of one of the cafés, Montpelier will incite you into staying a little longer.

Heading south west, and perhaps having used one of the free Aires de Service in the Hérault, you’ll find yourself in the fishing town of Sète.  The ‘Venise of Languedoc’ is the first Mediterranean fishing port.  Streaked by canals and bridges, the town is alive and buzzing early in the morning when the tuna fishing boats leave the port as it is when they return in the afternoon.  The commercial port is full of boutiques, cafés and restaurants with sunny terraces where you can enjoy all the local specialities.  You can also visit La Pointe Courte, a picturesque little quarter which housed the fishermen of L’Etang de Thau.  This is the area which produces an enormous amount of oysters, mussels, shrimps and other shell fish.  You can walk along the coastal footpath where you will be able to visit the oyster farms and do a bit of tasting.

Not far from Sète is the seaside town of Frontignan with its long stretches of beach and its pleasure boat port.  It is well known for it Muscat, a sherry type of drink which you are invited to sample when visiting the vinyards.

Motorhome travel in France wouldn’t be complete without a bit of wine tasting, so where better to find yourself than in Béziers, the capital of the Languedoc vineyards.  From the Cathedral of Saint Nazaire you will have a wonderful view over the vineyards.

There’s lots of coastline if you’re searching for a spot to relax on the beach.  Be careful not to find yourself on the famous, or infamous beach at Cap d’Agde - unless of course that’s what you’re looking for!  Apart from the nudist beach there is actually lots to do in this resort, plenty of activities for all of the family, so take your time, stop over in the Aires de Service in Languedoc Roussillon before going on to do some more motorhoming in Aude.
