Motorhoming in the Loire

Motorhoming in Loire

If you’re hiring a motorhome in France or hiring a motorhome in England, Loire, the most north western department in the region of the Rhône Alpes is not to be confused with the region Pays de la Loire in the north west of France.  Named after the river which runs the length of the department, Loire is a mix of industrial towns and wild open spaces.

Start your trip in the north west of the department in the little town of Saint Haon Le Chatel.  With its 14th century ramparts, this once ‘capital’ of the northern territories of the department of Loire is often described as an ‘open air’ museum.  Its 12th century church and its 15th and 16th century houses are all part of an incredibly well preserved architectural heritage and from an altitude of 500m it offers a superb panorama over the surrounding countryside.  You can use the Aires de Service in Loire to stopover and visit other beautiful villages such as Charlieu, Le Crozet and Ambierle.

Moving south you will pass through the area of Le Forez, where the Loire flows through the valleys surrounded by woods and mountains.  Don’t miss the little town of Montbrison, famous for its local speciality, a blue cheese of the same name.  If you only visit one of the 20 odd monuments classed of historical interest, make it ‘La Diana’ situated next to the cathedral.  Its arched wooden ceiling dates from the 13th century and is quite simply beautiful.

In the south of the department is its biggest town, Saint-Etienne.  An industrial town, it has developed around its soft furnishing and steel working industries and is the birthplace of sales by catalogue in France.  Trying to put its industrial reputation behind it, the town boasts today a very good museum of Art and Industry and also over 1500 acres of green spaces including parks, gardens and squares.

After motorhoming in the Rhône Alpes, pop across the borders of Loire into the other departments.  Try motorhoming in the Rhône, motorhoming in Isère, motorhoming in the Drôme or motorhoming in Ardèche.
