Motorhoming in the Pyrénées Orientales

Motorhoming in the Pyrénées Orientales

The Pyrénées Oriental is the southern most department of Languedoc Roussillon and borders Spain.  This is ‘catalan’ country and this Franco-Spanish mix gives the department its culture, and the mix of sea and mountains, tradition and modernism, sunshine and conviviality will win you over if the warm welcome doesn’t.

The Canigou is the emblem of the Pyrénées Orientales, the mountainous frontier with Spain and the symbol of the unity of the Catalan.  Its peak at 2784m of altitude can be seen from all over the region.  If you’re hiring a motorhome in France or hiring a motorhome in England, there are three circuits that you can use in your motorhome to go up the Canigou.  Vernet-les-Bains is the departure point for two of them and the third starts off in Prades.  You will have to get out and walk a bit though if you want go right to the top!

Buzzing with ambiance is the town of Perpignan, characterised by the red of its bricks against the blue of the sky. The inhabitants of Perpignan are first and foremost catalan.  The catalan language is in daily use and the population have a laid back way of life, that is, a little afternoon siesta before the lively rituals of the evening. Sun filled squares, shady walks, terraces buzzing with cafés, Perpignan offers a warm welcome and an atmosphere particular to this region.

The coast in this area is known as the Côte Vermeille and is rocky and rugged.  One of the coastal pearls in the department of Pyrénées Orientales is Collioure, well known for its anchovies. This enchanting setting can be found in a little creek where the mountains of the Pyrénées meet the Mediterranean.  From the pink of the domed church tower and the pastel colours of the facades to the stunning blue of the sky, it’s a feast for the eyes and with its little beaches, steep cliffs and narrow winding streets you will be transported by its Spanish ‘feel’ and atmosphere.

Motorhoming in Languedoc Roussillon is the perfect opportunity to sample all the local delights and specialities and the Pyrénées Orientales have lots to offer. Well known for its apricots, the area offers pears, cherries and almonds, not forgetting the delicious pomme de terre de Roussillon. These potatoes are low in starch and rich in mineral salts and vitamins which give them their wonderful flavour.
