Amongst the towns to visit in Vosges are its capital Saint-Dié-des-Vosges founded in 669 by the monks and ravaged in 1944 but rebuilt with talent and offering several interesting insights into its past; Epinal situated in a magnificent natural environment is just the place for a relaxing wander before taking a coffee in the town square ‘Place des Vosges, from where you can admire the arcades and the beautiful Renaissance residences.  Contrexéville and Vittel are spa towns of reputation; the Polish King Stanislas discovered the therapeutic qualities of the mineral waters of Contrexéville which were exploited in 1774 by King Louis XVl.  Decorated in a mix of Greek and Roman styles, the mosaics of the town are very pretty and evoke the style of the ‘belle époque’ in France; Vittel has a superb natural and architectural heritage with its spas, villas and palaces and its art-déco style casino and is the most chic town in Vosges.

Vosges offers a host of gastronomic delights too numerous to list.  Bilberry tarts are one of the most popular local patisseries, the bilberries being abundant in the Vosgien countryside; fruit liqueurs made from the wild fruit of the Vosges, concocted with ancient recipes; smoked meats often eaten with ‘Toffailles’, a dish made from potatoes, bacon and onions or Munster cheese with its characteristic aroma.
