Motorhoming In The Bas-Rhone

MOTORHOME SITES IN ALSACE BAS-RHONE

With its European capital Strasbourg, its history and culture, the Bas Rhone is one of the most interesting regions of France.  Hovering for many years between French and German control, the Bas Rhone is a feast of the two different cultures.

The northern most towns on the wine route are found in the Bas Rhone region.  Wangen, Westhoffen, Obernai (which also has some good beer to offer), Andlou, Kintzheim – the ‘route de vin’ is a glorious mix of history, nature, national heritage, gastronomy and unusual sights to see.  You will find no less than 19 signed footpaths which enable you to discover this breathtaking landscape on foot.  These welcoming medieval villages are home to the famous Alsacian vineyards where you’ll be able to taste the local liquid specialities before finding a ‘winstubs’ or local restaurant where good simple food featuring all the local specialities is served with, of course, a glass of local wine.

Further south, Strasbourg offers an impressive history dating back to the year 496.  The rich past of this city is evoked by each of its quarters and its monuments.  Not surprisingly in 1988 when the town celebrated its 2000 years it was classed by UNESCO as a site of world heritage.  Visit ‘La Petite France’, the ancient fishing quarter, where you can stroll through the streets or take a barge along the waterways to admire the half-timbered houses that date from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Mont Sainte Odile is 40km south of Strasbourg, a destination for religious pilgrims and well worth a visit if only to experience the calm and clean air of this area of exceptional natural beauty – time out for a little contemplation and meditation after so many miles!  Mont Sainte Odile is surrounded by a Pagan Wall 14kms long, up to 3m high and as wide as 1m 80 in some places.  The reasons for its existence and the purpose it serves remain a mystery.

Selestat is one of the largest towns arriving in the south of the Bas Rhone.  Visit ‘La Place de la Victoire’ where you can relax in one of the many cafés in this pedestrian area while feasting your eyes on the surrounding monuments and shops.  While you’re there visit the Bread Museum where you can taste the regional specialities such as Bretzels or the ‘Kougelhopf’, a sweet bread decorated with almonds.

Whatever or wherever you go in the Bas Rhone you’ll be sure to delight your tastebuds and see some wonderful sights.  Let yourself go and make time to take in all these visual and gustative pleasures!
