Motorhoming in Allier

Motorhoming in Allier

Allier is the northern most of the four ‘departements’ in the region of Auvergne.  Auvergne is a land of wide open space, famous for its volcanic mountains and thermal spas.  Situated in the middle of France, Allier is appreciated for its contrasting landscapes and offers deep gorges, mountains and enormous forests.  This varied countryside lends itself to a variety of sports: mountain biking; hiking; horse riding; paragliding; ski-ing; canoeing; something for all the family.

There are no less than nine châteaux and fortresses to visit in the region of Allier, one of the most impressive being the Château of the Bourbon family situated in the spa town of Bourbon L’Archambault.  The town has a rich historic past and is situated between Moulin to the east and the Forest of Tronçais to the west.

Between rolling green hills and copses, Moulin was built on the banks of the River Allier and has conserved numerous features of its glory years in the 15th century when it was at the centre of the Bourbon family empire.

The forest of Tronçais is one of the most beautiful oak forests in the world.  Stroll through this magnificent area, one of the largest forests in France covering nearly 25 acres, to discover its ancient and protected oak trees, its legendary fountains and its ruined chapels.

Travelling south from Moulin towards Vichy, take the time to visit the ‘Parc du Pal’, with its wildlife park and 25 attractions including aquatic shows and its vertiginous outdoor water flumes. Lots to keep everyone entertained from the youngest to the oldest member of the family.

Despite other local products, Vichy owes its notoriety today to its thermal spas and of course its bottled mineral water.  The exploitation of the spa dates back to the year 1410, but it was Napolean III who decided to turn it into a modern thermal spa town in 1852. He built a railway station opening the town up to clients for its newly built casino and boutiques.  This inspired the curiosity of people from all around the world, hence the curious and diverse style of this famous town.

So if you’re thinking of motorhome travel in France or hiring a motorhome in France head for the dizzy mountain heights of Allier in the Auvergne and discover all of its splendid history and breathtaking landscapes.
