Motorhoming in Aveyron

Motorhoming in Aveyron

Aveyron can be found at the north eastern extremity of the region Midi-Pyrénées.  It is made up of rocky plateaus and deep valleys and if you are interested by motorhome travel in France and by nature at its most simplest and unspoilt, Aveyron is a destination for you.  If you enjoy walking, riding or mountain biking, hiring a motorhome in France could be the ideal way for you to discover the wide open spaces of Aveyron.

Ten villages in Aveyron are classed amongst ‘the most beautiful villages of France’.  Amongst them is Sauveterre de Rouergue, a beautiful medieval fortified town.  Surrounded and protected by its ramparts, there are four gateways into the town at the centre of which is a square lined with arcades and medieval houses.  It is a real open air museum.

Nearby is the neighbouring town of Laguiole which became famous at the beginning of the 19th century for its folding pen knives created originally for the local shepherds.  The brand, known by the mark of the ‘bee’, is still created by craftsmen in the town to this day and is exported all over the world.

Another interesting village is Bozouls which has to be seen to believe the situation in which it was built.  The village was constructed in a 100m deep gorge formed in the shape of a horse shoe by the river Dourdou with a diameter of around 400m.  Visit the quarter of the château where you will be amazed by the houses built on a rocky outcrop in the middle of the river bend.

Roquefort in Aveyron is a small village with around 600 inhabitants but its name is known worldwide because of the local speciality, the cheese of the same name.  The 15th century cellars where this cheese is matured can be visited and the sheep who provide the milk for the cheese can be seen grazing everywhere in the surrounding green countryside.

There are lots of sites of natural beauty to discover in Aveyron such as the Gorges of La Truyère and Lake Pareloup, so while you’re motorhoming in Midi-Pyrénées use the Aires de Service in Aveyron for your overnight stops. You can also cross over the departmental borders to go motorhoming in the Tarn, motorhoming in Tarn et Garonne or motorhoming in the Lot.
