Motorhoming in Cantal

Motorhoming in Cantal

Cantal is the department found in the south west of the region of Auvergne. If you’re hiring a motorhome in France, hiring a motorhome in England or just at the stage of thinking about doing a bit of motorhome travel in France, Cantal could be a good starting point for you.

With some of the least travelled roads in France, this rugged land at the heart of Auvergne is home to some of the finest touring country on offer.  One of the most spectacular sights you will see when you’re on the roads of Cantal is ‘le Viaduc de Garabit’ which is to be found south of the town of Saint Flour.  This railway viaduct was constructed between 1881 and 1884 and is witness to the design and construction prowess of Gustave Eiffel. At 122m above the river Truyère and 564m in length it links the two sides of the valley and is a man made work of art amongst the wonders of Mother Nature.

In the north is the village of Antignac.  It rests unchanged by time with its dry stone walls, fountains, windmills and old bridges.   Not surprisingly the village has been chosen by a local group of historians and archaeologists as a centre for ancient plants.  A garden has been created housing plants found on archaeological sites or local zones cultivated since ancient times.  You could participate in one of the medieval feast organised using their produce.

Cantal is also famous for its cheese.  Made from cow’s milk by a method unchanged since 2000 years, it is one of the most prestigious of French cheeses.  There are around forty communes in Cantal where this delicious cheese is made, their cows grazing on the high pastures.  Apparently the beef is very tasty as well!
