Motorhoming in Haute Saône

Haute Saône is, by its geographical situation, a ‘crossroads’ department.  Occupying the northern territories of Franche Comté, it is the link between the two regions of strong identity, Lorraine and Bourgogne.  It is also in the middle of the two mountain ranges of Jura and Vosges and close to the Swiss and German borders.  The superb countryside of Haute Saône has become the crossing and merging point of cultures, populations and economies and offers an exceptional destination if you are doing some motorhome travel in France.

For a little trip back in time in the history of Haute Saône, visit the little town of Vauvilliers in the north of the department.  As you wander through the streets you will see the vestiges of the different periods of the town’s history such as the 16th century wooden market hall, pretty Renaissance houses with flamboyant facades and the château with its multi-coloured, varnished tiled roof which today houses the school and Town Hall.  This is a charming town to pass through with a wealth of things to see.  An equally charming visit is the town of Pesmes in the south of the department which has its own rich history and architectural heritage such as the 15th century Maison Royale, the 12th century church of Saint Hilaire and the 11th century château.

Vesoul is the capital of Haute Saône and is an interesting and animated town.  The old town has conserved its 15th and 16th century buildings with some particularly beautiful Gothic facades and the impressive 18th century private residences which adorn the pretty streets and squares.  Climb to the top of the ‘Colline de la Motte’ where you will find a little chapel dedicated to the Virgin, Notre Dame who is reputed to have saved the town from the ravages of Cholera in 1854.  From here you will have a superb view over the Alps and the mountains of Jura.

Hiring a motorhome in France is the ideal opportunity to sample the gustative delights of its different regions.  Haute Saône is home to kirsch and the town of Fougerolles has specialized in its production and used the fruits of its orchards and particularly cherries to make kirsch since the middle ages.  Another local delight is the Cancoillotte which is a creamy ‘liquid’ cheese often flavoured with white wine and eaten warm.  Probably be nice with a slice of cured ham from Luxeuil les Bains.  Fumed and cured for nine months, this ‘raw’ ham is very refined.

From Haute Saône it’s easy to go motorhoming in the Territoire de Belfort, motorhoming in Doubs, motorhoming in Jura, motorhoming in Bourgogne or motorhoming in Lorraine.
