Motorhoming in Loire Atlantique

Motorhoming in Loire Atlantique

Loire Atlantique is one of the two departments of the five that make up the region of Pays de la Loire situated on the Atlantic coast.  It is a nice mix of coastal resorts and nice towns and has lots of interest to see and do if you are planning to do some motorhome travel in France.

The city of Nantes can be found 50kms inland from the coast and is a large city, full of interest.  It has been an important city throughout the history of the region. This is obvious when visiting and can be seen in the various impressive works of architecture throughout the city.  Nantes is the natural crossroads between the Anjou, the Vendée and Brittany and the debate continues as to whether it should be the capital of Brittany as opposed to Rennes, the city which currently holds the title.  This historical university town offers gardens such as the Beaujoire Park with its collection of Magnolias; museums, in particular the printing museum; a city centre shoppers paradise full of interesting boutiques and an animated nightlife, not to mention the history of the town.  Historical visits of the city are offered, but otherwise just take the time to visit the 15th century château and the cathedral of Saint Pierre.

In the north east of the region is the rural town of Châteaubriant which houses one of the most beautiful château of the department.  Construction started in the 15th century but part of the château was built during the Renaissance period.  Combine a visit with a wander around the Wednesday morning market.

If you’re hiring a motorhome in France or hiring a motorhome in England and you want to spend some time on the coast head for the resort of La Baule.  You can use the Aires de Service in Loire Atlantique for your stop overs while you’re travelling.  Defined as the most beautiful beach in Europe, its 9km of golden sand, sea air and sunny climate are a real tonic.  This chic and trendy resort developed after the arrival of the railway line in 1879 and today, behind the beach and hidden amongst the pine trees are many beautiful villas built by the investors of the day.  La Baule has everything to make your stay worthwhile and there are often big events held on its large seafront promenade.

If you’re looking for something a little more relaxing, visit the little town of Le Croisic which became one of Frances first seaside resorts in the 19th century.  Originally a port town used to export the salt produced in the region, it offers beaches of fine sand, a little château and rocky cliffs on this section of rugged coastline.  You can take a wander along the coastal paths or visit the Océarium with its examples of local flora and fauna.

Whatever you decide to do while in Loire Atlantique, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the neighbouring departments and go motorhoming in Vendée, motorhoming in Maine et Loire or motorhoming in Ille et Vilaine.
