Motorhoming in Tarn et Garonne

Motorhoming in Tarn et Garonne

The Tarn et Garonne in the northern half of the Midi-Pyrénées is a picturesque land, full of history, which lends itself to ramblers who will discover all of its delights.  When you’re hiring a motorhome in France or hiring a motorhome in Enland to do some motorhome travel in France, use the free Aires de Service in Tarn et Garonne to park up and go for a stroll.  While wandering through the Gorges of Aveyron and the Valley of the Garonne you will discover a wealth of country houses and charming villages.  The Midi Canal crosses the department and provides as elsewhere an agreeable setting for an afternoon saunter.

Another ‘pink city’ created by the counts of Toulouse in 1144 was an important transit town for merchandise heading for Bordeaux and was considered by the end of the 18thcentury the 3rd town of the south west of France.  Today the town still prospers and has become an exceptional tourist destination.  The town is classed as a city of art and history and is described as the ‘pinkest of the pink cities’, the reference coming from the colour of the bricks commonly used in the region.  Stroll along its roads and alleys which open out into vast squares such as the Place Nationale with its double arcades dating from the 12th century.  There rest also, the vestiges of the town which existed in the Middle Ages.  Don’t miss the local market on a Wednesday or a Saturday when you can taste the local speciality, Montauriol, a chocolate truffle filled with a cherry soaked in Armagnac.  There’s also the Alose, a fish which swims up the river Garonne in the spring from the Atlantic and is a dish cooked frequently using red wine for celebrations, and the Cabécou, a cheese made from goat’s milk, one of the smallest cheeses in France

In the west of the region is the little village of Moissac which is well known for its sweet and juicy, honey coloured grapes.  It is one of the stages of the pilgrimage of Saint Jacques de Compostelle.  Here the local tourist office proposes a foot tour, ‘the route of flavours’, which invites you to wander through the village tasting all of the local specialities including the grapes.  There’s some lovely architecture in the village, not least the church which is classed by UNESCO and has 24 bells which you may be lucky enough to hear when they sound.

Carry on your motorhoming experience by hopping over the departmental borders and go motorhoming in Lot, motorhoming in Tarn, motorhoming in Aveyron, motorhoming in Gers or motorhoming in the Haute-Garonne.  You can use the Aires de Service in the midi-Pyrénées for your stop overs.
