Motorhoming in the Côte d' Or

Motorhoming in the Côte-d’ Or

Côte d’Or is the Eastern most of the four departments of the Bourgogne, or Burgundy as we know it.  With its rolling green planes and its forests it is, of course, best know for its wines.  The Côte d’ Or produces 32 of the 33 ‘grand Crus’ which come from Burgundy.  The region benefits from a micro-climate which is perfect for wine making and row upon row of vines stretch as far as the eye can see.

In the department of Côte d’ Or, the Morvan National Park which groups together 95 communities in the region, is characterised by its rolling valleys and brooks, ideal ground for all those who love hiking.  Actively engaged in promoting local tourism, the park proposes various sporting and cultural activities.

If you’re hiring a motorhome in France you could start your tour north of Dijon in the small town of Chatillon sur Seine.  Here, near to the origin of the river Seine, you’ll find a pretty little town full of charm but also full of history.  Visit the Chatillon museum which houses a Prince’s tomb, discovered in a burial mound in the town, dating from 500BC.  En route for Dijon, pass by Bèze and visit its grotto where you can take a boat trip on the underground lake with its clear waters and ceiling covered in stalactites.

Dijon itself is the capital of Côte d’ Or and also Burgundy.  This economic, geographic and historical centre has its origins in Roman times and was rebuilt in 1137 after the medieval town was burnt to the ground.  The elegance of the town is symbolised by its old quarter with its half timbered houses, numerous churches and cathedral.  Dijon is full of treasures waiting to be discovered and worth a visit if motorhome travel in France is part of your future plans.

Head south stopping off at Marsannay-la-Côte, the only town in Burgundy to produce red, rosé and white wine; Beaune, the home of Burgundy wine, a town of art and history.  To the west of Dijon you will find Semur en Auxois.  Take the time to discover this picturesque town, protected by its medieval fortress with its four imposing towers and stroll around the ramparts, a real visual delight awaits you.

Finally, Saulieu, which has profited from its place on the route between Paris and Lyon. This is where the Charolais race of cow is bred. This most tasty of all beef has attracted travelling gourmands through the ages and contributed to the gastronomic reputation of the town.
