Motorhoming in the Haute-Garonne

Motorhoming in the Haute-Garonne

Haute-Garonne is situated in the southern half of the Midi-Pyrénées on the eastern side of the region.  It is here that we find the regional capital of Toulouse, gateway to the Pyrénées, a beautiful and authentic city full of tradition and history.  In the Haute-Garonne, the gastronomy is like the nature, rich and abundant, and it’s not really about eating, but more about treating yourself and rediscovering the wonderful taste of local, quality produce.  What better reason to embark on some motorhome travel in France.  Try hiring a motorhome in France or hiring a motorhome in England to discover the delights of the Haute-Garonne.

Toulouse in the central north of the department is known as the ‘pink city’.  Toulouse had its heyday in the 16th and 17th century when the rich bourgeois built many beautiful houses and private hotels in the town.  Seemingly forgotten by the industrial revolution, it wasn’t until after the First World War and the arrival of the aeroplane that the modern Toulouse started to develop to become today, a modern university town and a well known centre for research and industry.  The Midi Canal runs through the centre of Toulouse as part of its 360km course between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic and is a very pleasant place to take a stroll.

In contrast to the modern centre of Toulouse are the villages of the Haute-Garonne such as Auterive, Saint Béat and Venerque, all with their own history from as far back as the Middle Ages, a wealth of interesting architecture and local traditions.  The thermal spa town of Luchon offers the winter ski slopes of the Superbagnères which is linked to Luchon by cable car or some breathtaking walking country in the summer months when the surrounding peaks and valleys can be appreciated by foot or on a bike.

Whatever you decide to do in the Haute-Garonne, you can benefit from the free Aires de Service in the Haute-Garonne before continuing your trip further afield and going motorhoming in Gers, motorhoming in the Hautes-Pyrénées or motorhoming in Ariège.
