Motorhoming in the Haute-Loire

Motorhoming in the Haute-Loire

The Haute-Loire can be found in the south east of Auvergne and like the three other departments in the region is a land of spectacular landscapes and wide open spaces.  A mountainous land, covered in places by huge pine forests and scarred by the deep gorges of the rivers Allier and Loire.  The Haute-Loire is a rural paradise but has, never-the-less active and dynamic industry coupled with its strong agricultural traditions.  The beauty and diversity of the landscape is the only invitation needed to inspire you into doing some motorhome travel in France.

Pass through the small town of Brioude in the north east of the department. It became famous in the 19th century for the salmon caught by the thousand in the river Allier. Continue on to the village of Lavoûte-Chilhac. This unique sight consists of a village built on a peninsula which has been created by the meanderings of the river Allier.  A magnificent medieval bridge links together the two banks of the town.  A little further south east is the town of Le-Puy-En-Velay, a beautiful natural site offering stunning panoramas.  It is the departure point for many pilgrimages, having been since the Middle Ages a ‘saint’s town’, home to many religious monuments.  The ‘Place du Martouret’ is very picturesque despite being the local site for executions in its day, and the town is also very well known for its lace making.

Find yourself a place to stay in one of the Aires de Service in the Haute-Loire while you’re travelling around and give yourself the time to sample some of the local specialities.  Puy is famous for its lentils but perhaps more appetisingly for its ‘fin gras’ and ‘noire de Velay’.  The fin gras is the local beef, bred on pastures at altitudes of more than 1100m and using ancestral practices.  It has a very aromatic flavour which comes from the ‘ciste’, an aromatic grass found in the pastures.  The noire de Velay is a black mountain sheep, the lambs of which are of particularly good quality, delicious, tender and tasty.

So if you’re hiring a motorhome in England or hiring a motorhome in France, take the opportunity to sample the delights of the wide open spaces of Haute-Loire; the gorges  of the Loire valley with their beaches and activity centres; Mount Mézenc with its wild landscape and vast plateaus or the waterfall of La Baume.  Whatever you decide to see, combine your visit with some motorhoming in the Rhône Alpes to the east or some motorhoming in Languedoc Roussillon to the south.
