Motorhoming in the Lot

Motorhoming in the Lot

Lot is the northern most of the eight departments in the region Midi-Pyrénées.  It is often referred to as the ‘the land of wonders’ because of its exceptional landscapes, buildings and sites of interest.  Lot lives mainly by its tourist trade and has many things of interest making motorhome travel in France an ideal means to see it all.  If you’re hiring a motorhome in England or hiring a motorhome in France, the Lot offers grottos, canyons, a multitude of medieval villages, châteaux, forts and some of Frances most ancient vineyards.

The valley of Célé follows the river of the same name which has cut through the limestone to create a green and luxurious valley that has been the home to mankind since the dawn of time.  Here you will find no industry, just fields of sunflowers, ancient vineyards, peaceful little villages and hamlets with their rivers and windmills. It is a haven of peace and perfect for those who wish to take their time.  You can use the free Aires de Service in the Lot for your overnight stops.  Whilst in the valley you can visit villages such as Marsilhac-sur-Célé and Espagnac-Sainte-Eulalie, lost in time and also the Grotto of Peche Merle.  This huge cavity discovered in 1922 measures 2km and houses some of the finest prehistoric art.

In the valley of the river Lot, the limestone cliffs of the valley sides give way to open fertile planes and the cultivation of some of the oldest vineyards in France.  Here you can follow stages of the footpath which runs alongside the Lot and discover wonderful little villages such as Puy-l’Evêque with its imposing 14th century fortress.  The town of Cahors, from where comes the name of the famous and one of the oldest of French wines, was formed 2000 years ago in a bend of the river Lot.  One can still see many of the well conserved remains of this ancient town which is symbolised by its bridge, the 14th century Pont Valentré, with its three defensive towers.  You can climb up to the top of Mont Saint Cyr which will give you a marvellous view of the town nestled in the river bend and don’t miss the high point of the week, the Saturday morning market which takes place in front of the towns 12th century cathedral.

Don’t leave the Lot without visiting the impressive city of Rocamadour which comes second only to the Mont St Michel in terms of French tourist attractions.  This city, born in the Middle Ages, clings to the side of the Alzou Canyon and dominates the landscape.  It is a stage on the pilgrimage of Saint Jacques de Compostelle and is dedicated to the ‘Vierge Noire’, the black virgin, a 12th century statue of the Vierge which can be found in the chapel of Notre Dame.  There are various attractions in the city including a tourist train.
