Motorhoming in the Yonne

Motorhoming in the Yonne

The northern most of the four regions of Bourgogne, the Yonne is criss-crossed by the waterways and routes leading to the French capital.  All this makes for easy motorhome travel in France and you can stop over in the free Aires de Service in the Yonne.

Travelling south from the northern most part of the Bourgogne, you will arrive in the town of Sens.  In the old town, the ramparts have given way to boulevards and walkways where your gaze will fall on numerous interesting architectural features.  On the outskirts of the town is the Park Moulin à Tan, with its tropical greenhouses, animal enclosures and children’s play area, a very agreeable and relaxing way to spend an afternoon.

Continuing in a south easterly direction you will arrive in Chablis, the town which gives its name to the exceptional wine.  At the heart of the Bourgogne region and set amongst the vines, the village was established by monks from Normandy who were fleeing the Vikings in the 9th century.  The old streets are lined with houses from the 14th, 16th and 17th centuries, some of them rather unusual.  This charm and authenticity makes Chablis an interesting stop off point.  Why not find the Aires de service in the Yonne and stop over before heading south west to Auxerre.

Capital of the department, Auxerre, is since ancient times an important town on the big routes between Lyon and Boulogne.  Dominated by its cathedral, the town of Auxerre follows the river Yonne and is built on the hillside of its northern banks.  Have a wander through the streets to Saint Nicolas Square and admire its fountain and half-timbered houses.

If you are heading south east to carry on motorhoming in the Côte-d’Or, stop over in one of the Aires de Service in the Yonne before visiting Montréal.  This proud little village is one of the communes the most characteristic of the region of Bourgogne, full of the vestiges of its rich heritage.  With its gateways dating from before the 13th century and its medieval houses, walk to the end of the main street onto the esplanade for one of the most beautiful views of the north Bourgogne.

If motorhoming in the Bourgogne appeals to you, from the Yonne it’s easy to carry on and do some motorhoming in the Nievre.  So if you’re hiring a motorhome in France check it out!
